Essentials for the Birthing Center

As you prepare for one of the biggest moments of your life, having a few comforting essentials on hand can bring a sense of calm. Here’s a list of must-have items to help you feel comfortable, prepared, and ready to embrace the beautiful journey ahead.

Labor and Delivery Bag

Packing the essentials for labor can foster relaxation and make you feel more in control. Make sure you have your:

  • ID and Insurance. Keep these on hand for a smoother check-in process as you arrive at your chosen birthing center
  • Birth Plan Copies. Print a few copies of your birth plan to ensure birthing center staff clearly understand your preferences.
  • Comfortable Clothes. A loose-fitting outfit or robe will make you feel more comfortable before and after labor. It’s also one of the most important first-time mom essentials.

Comfort Items

Keeping personal comfort items with you can help you feel at ease. Create a calming space with your favorite:

  • Pillow. Some pillows in birthing centers can be a bit firm; bring your own for extra comfort.
  • Calming oils. Besides your go-to essential oils (if any), lavender or chamomile oils can help ease pregnancy symptoms and lessen anxiety and stress during childbirth.
  • Music playlist. Familiar songs and tunes that relax you can help reduce stress and make your birthing environment more homey.

After Birth Care Needs

Don’t forget to prep for recovery and nursing after birth, prioritizing essentials that add comfort and convenience. Make sure you have:

  • Postpartum Pads: These provide extra support during recovery.
  • Nursing Bras: Comfortable, supportive bras will make breastfeeding more convenient.
  • Loose Clothing: After birth, breathable and loose clothes will be most comfortable.

Pro Tip:
Preparing a few weeks before your due date is a great way to reduce last-minute stress, ensuring you’re ready when the big moment arrives.

Newborn Essentials

Once your essentials are covered, it’s time to ensure everything’s set for your little one’s arrival. Preparing the necessary goods and supplies for your baby will help you feel more confident and focused on your first moments together. Here’s what you need:

  • Clothing and accessories

Bring soft, cozy clothing like a onesie, a tiny hat, and socks to keep your baby warm and comfortable. A swaddle blanket can also help them feel snug and secure, similar to the feeling of being in the womb.

  • Diapering

Newborn diapers, gentle wipes, and mild diaper rash cream are must-haves. Babies go through diapers fast, so keep a good supply on hand to make those first changes easy and stress-free.

  • Feeding

Whether you plan to breastfeed or bottle-feed, having the essentials can help ease the transition. Pack a few bottles, a pacifier, and burp cloths for feeding and clean up. You may also need a nursing cover and extra nursing pads for comfort if you’re breastfeeding.

  • Health and Safety

Consider packing baby-safe nail clippers to trim those surprisingly sharp newborn fingernails. Bring a gentle baby thermometer and a soothing baby lotion to nourish their delicate skin.

Preparing Your Home

Bringing your baby home is a moment you’ll treasure forever. Preparing your space beforehand can make those first few days and weeks even more special, allowing you to focus on bonding with your little one. Here’s how to get your home ready:

Nursery Basics

  • Crib or Bassinet: Choose one with a firm mattress and fitted sheets.
  • Changing Station: Set up a table or area stocked with diapers, wipes, and diaper cream.
  • Storage Solutions. Use bins or shelves to organize baby clothes and supplies.
  • Comfort Items: A rocking chair or glider can make feeding and soothing easier.

Baby-Proofing Basics

  • Secure Furniture: Anchor heavy furniture to walls and cover sharp corners.
  • Lock Cabinets: Keep cleaning supplies and sharp objects out of reach.
  • Clear Surfaces: Remove small items that could be choking hazards.

Health and Safety at Home

  • First-Aid Kit: Include baby-safe fever reducers, bandages, and saline drops.
  • Thermometer: A must-have for monitoring fevers.
  • Safe Sleep Setup: Follow safe sleep guidelines; place your baby on their back in a crib or bassinet with no loose bedding or toys to avoid any accidents.

Self-Care for Parents

  • Resting Area: Create a cozy spot where you can relax or nap.
  • Snacks and Hydration: Keep healthy snacks and water handy for quick nourishment.
  • Bonding Routines: Schedule quiet moments for skin-to-skin contact or reading.

Your hospital bag can be a source of reassurance during those exciting, unpredictable final weeks in the hospital or midwife center

  • Pack ahead of time. Have your bag ready and waiting a month before your due date. You’ll thank yourself later!
  • Have essentials on hand. Place your bag somewhere easy to grab, like the trunk of your car or near your front door.
  • Double-check your checklist. Before you seal the bag, make sure you’ve included all the necessary items for you, your baby, and your partner. A checklist can help avoid last-minute scrambles.
